What should I do? Sisters passing kidney stones?
I have a 15 year old sister that lives with my grandmother. Lately she’s been passing kidney stones. She went to the ER, and they perscribed her lortabs & amox. She called me hysterical begging me to take her back to the hospital, because her back was killing her, and my grandmother wouldnt give her the lortabs because theyre a "narcotic" and she didn’t want her getting addicted. My sisters in agony. What do I do?
The only thing that will help really would be something that could kill the pain. I’ve had kidney stones before (when I was 16). I took about 4 days off school and was prescribed vicodin and 600mg ibuprofen to take depending on the pain. The only thing that really helped was the vicodin.
As for the narcotics… your sister will only be taking them for a short term. I think addiction is more common with long-term pain management. Either take her back to the hospital to get a new prescription for something else that will probably be a narcotic (hassle)… or just go over to your grandmother’s and sneak her the lortabs. The pain she’s in is excruciating.. and the pain of actually passing the stone through the urethra rivals the pain of child birth. She was prescribed pain killers for a reason..

You need to talk to Grandma and set her straight about how painful kidney stones are! But if she is persistant, SHE needs to take your sister to the hospital and get a non-narcotic pain reliever. Now.

She shouldn’t take antibiotics, she will just get immune to them and once that happens no antibiotic will help her as much next time she needs them for something ells..
Get her 100% cranberry juice and make sure she drinks a LOT of it everyday till she gets better and make sure she cuts down on the salty foods!!

Yes vicodine will help the pain but it also has a little amount of heroine in it.
