My daughter has just passed some kidney stones, what now?

My daughter is 4 yrs old, she was diagnosed with a urine infection, on the anti biotics for it, tonight she’s just passed kidney stones. We’re in the doctors first thing Monday, but what do we expect now? Isn’t she a little young for all this?

Yes she is. It is important that you keep the stones as they will need to be analysed for type and content. I assume at 4 years old with a diagnosis of UTI she was going to be investigated anyway, since this is mandatory in her age group.

She will now certainly need ultrasound and possibly an IVU dye test to confirm, no further stones, check the condition of her kidneys and check her ureters are also in good shape. Provided she is quite well she can wait until Monday, as the tests will not be done immediately anyway. However if she is toxic or in pain it will not wait until then and you would need to contact NHS Direct/24.

I would think she is alittle to young, and I defintly think she should see a Dr. if the pain gets to bad you may need to take her to the hospital. Depending on how many stones she has she may feel alot better now that she has passed them, keep a close eye on her. Make sure she is drinkin nothing but water and cranberry juice to keep her kidneys moving. Good Luck, and hope she feels better soon!!

4 years old does sound a little young….talk to your doctor about a possible reason behind why she might be having kidney stones so early.

since she passed the kidney stones already, try to save them to show them to your doctor. if you didnt thats ok though. now just wait until monday.

The worst is over. My question is, why such a young child passing kidney stones? Does she have PDK?

Yes, she is. I haven’t heard of a kidney stone patient so young before.

Your doctor should have the stones analyzed to find out exactly what kind they are (calcium, uric acid, etc.) And she should have blood work done to check for any abnormalities that might cause high values for the minerals that are found in the stones. (for example, hyper-parathyroidism causes high calcium in the blood).

It may be that it will be as easy as adjusting her diet or it may be that she will need medicine. Follow up with your doctor, or ask for a referral to a urologist, so you can get all the answers you need for her condition.

Husband has kidney stones (calcium) – he needs to watch how much dairy he eats, as well as other high calcium foods.
